Opening Day Is Less Than A Week Away!

That’s right, wake the kids and call the neighbors, Major League Baseball’s 2013 Opening Day is next Sunday March 31st. For baseball fans, like me, that is really good news. I have been a D-backs fan since long before Opening Day 1998.

One of my great pleasures, as a fan, was to watch the first regular season game of a brand new franchise, the Arizona Dimondbacks, from a box seat half way between home and first base in their brand new Major League ballpark, the “BOB” aka Bank One Ballpark.

We lost that first home opener but we’ve been winning ever since. Since 1998, five National League West Division Titles, 2011, 2007, 2002, 2001,  and 1999. 1 National League Pennant 2001 and that same year we became the youngest franchise to win a world series in the long and storied history of Major League Baseball.

Baseball had a rich tradition in Arizona long before talk of bringing a big-league team even started. The state has been a frequent spring  training site since 1946 and is currently the spring training home of the, Cubs, White Sox, Reds, Indians, Rockies, Royals, Angels, Dodgers, Brewers, Athletics, Padres, Giants, Mariners and Rangers.

It’s been fun to watch all these great teams play at the many spring training parks around the valley but now it’s time for the “boys of summer” to play’em like they count.

I love baseball, I think it’s the greatest American game because I believe it brings out the best in those who play it. I’m not the only fan who believes that statement, here’s a few quotes from some folks who agree with me.

“Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona… not all holes or games are created equal.” ? George F. Will

After the Yankees suffered a lopsided lose a reporter ask, why did you play so hard today, “Because there might have been somebody in the stands today who’d never seen me play before, and might never see me again” – Joe DiMaggio

“In baseball, you can’t kill the clock. You’ve got to give the other man his chance. That’s why this is the greatest game”. – Earl Weaver

“I see great things in baseball. It’s our game – the American game.”Walt Whitman

“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that’s the way baseball is”.Bob Feller

“Little League baseball is a very good thing because it keeps the parents off the streets.” – Yogi Berra

And to quote the immortal Ernie Banks “It’s a great day for a ball game; let’s play two!

See you at the ballpark!
